Installing some 1/4” drywall to make ease of getting rid of an outdated popcorn ceiling. We are going over another layer of drywall, because of this, it is imperative we mark out all of our joists with chalk lines first. These will be our guides. We also use 1 5/8” drywall screws as opposed to the standard 1 1/4” because we are going through 3/4” of material (first layer 1/2”, second layer 1/4”). We could have scrapped and skim coated it, but this can be very labour intensive and time consuming. WINDOW CASING TIP: ⬇️ 1. First I establish my reveal depths on the window jamb; in this case I matched the old paint lines so the casing rested where it once was. 2. Once I have my reveals marked out, I can measure from side to side and find out my inner 2 dimensions; height and width. 3. With my inner height and width combined with the width of my material, I can figure out my outer dimensions. In this case I am doing a craftsmen style casing where the top and bottom casing overlaps the side casing by 3/8’s of an inch. With this information, I can cut my top and bottom casing as well as my side casing pieces accordingly. 4. I like to preassemble the 4 casing pieces in the ground nice and flat (using protection against the floor of course). I use instant bond CA glue and activator (2 part glue). I glue all 4 corners and we end up with one casing unit. As long as your cuts are square, the assembly should be perfectly square which is a big benefit to this technique; this saves time as opposed to squaring one piece to another in a piece by piece assembly approach. 5. With your reveals marked out and your casing unit ready to go, you can glue the inner edge of your casing unit and then lift it into place and tack one corner (I like to do bottom right as I am right handed) while holding the top middle with your left hand. With one corner nailed you can adjust the positioning of the unit while it remains square. You can then fine tune the best orientation by splitting the difference of any irregularities found with the reveal lines. I will then tack the upper left corner, then further inspect the positioning and fine tune if necessary which is still easy to do with only two 18 gauge nails in place. 6. If I am happy with the positioning and it looks even all the way around, I will continue to nail it in place ensuring that it is pressed flat against the surface and the reveal join is tight. Since I installed this as one unit, the joins at the corner should have remained flat to one another which would be a challenge on an imperfect wall with a piece by piece approach.
